Orthodontics

Orthodontic braces are the most traditional way that teeth are straightened. Generally, you will need to wear the brace for in-between 6 months and two years. During this time you will be monitored closely, and we will make appropriate adjustments to your brace to ensure a desired finish.

We can treat those under 18 who fit the NHS criteria, free of charge.

With standard braces, the brackets are cemented to the front of the teeth, which are quite uniform in their shape. However, lingual brackets are attached to the back side of the teeth. The back side of each tooth has its own unique shape – unlike the front of each tooth, which is fairly uniform among all people. Standard brackets are mass-produced, but each lingual bracket must be custom-formed to the unique shape of each individual tooth.

Your back teeth will not meet at first because your front teeth will be hitting the brackets on the back of the upper front teeth. This may seem hard to deal with but it will speed up your treatment noticeably, and it will prevent you from clenching, which can remove brackets and make it more difficult to move your teeth to new positions.

First, a plaster cast of the teeth is made and brackets are prepared custom moulded to each tooth. The brackets are then removed from the cast and set in a layer of wax, and placed into a small plaster applicator. The lingual brackets for the front teeth are set in a layer of wax in the plaster applicator. Cement is then applied to each lingual bracket. The lingual brackets are pressed into place against the backside of the teeth with the aid of an applicator. Once the cement sets, the applicator breaks away easily, leaving the lingual brackets on the teeth.

Normal Braces (also known as orthodontic braces or simply braces) are to align teeth and their position with regard to a person’s bite. They are often used to correct malocclusions such as underbites, overbites, cross bite and open bites, deep bites, or crooked teeth and various other flaws of teeth and jaws, whether cosmetic or structural.

Braces move and align teeth by applying pressure on them for a set amount of time; around 6months to 2 years. Often braces involve wire, which helps move the teeth and rubber bands that help correct the alignment.
