So You Don’t Want a Black Filling?
White fillings have advanced significantly over the last few years and they are now much stronger and more reliable than they were a decade ago. In the past, black fillings or silver amalgams as they are properly called, were seen as the strongest and most reliable way to fill a cavity and that’s why many people’s mouths are populated with them. They are still extremely reliable but now white fillings have advanced to a point that they are every bit as strong and of course, they are far more attractive.
One of the obvious downsides of black fillings is that they can look unsightly, especially if you need quite a few of them and you need them for teeth that will be on show. Although more expensive, white fillings are far more aesthetically pleasing and nobody will notice that you’ve got them.
That’s the number one reason why more and more people are prepared to pay that bit extra. White fillings will not ruin your smile and cosmetically, they are a significant improvement.
If you add to that they are now much stronger and more reliable, white fillings are an extremely popular choice.
Making your teeth stronger
When you have a white filling only a small amount of your tooth is removed before the white filling is applied. This means there is far less chance of the tooth chipping or fracturing and the structure of the tooth remains strong.
Unlike black fillings, you can use your white fillings immediately after they have been done without fear of them falling out. White fillings can be bonded to your tooth very effectively, often making the tooth stronger than before.
So, there is no need to have black fillings any longer. If you have always felt self-conscious about black fillings then it’s comforting to know that white fillings are a great option.
