Brush your teeth twice a day…
One of the most important things you can do to safeguard your oral health is to brush your teeth twice a day. This is something that we often learn at a young age, but we don’t always learn why it is important to brush twice a day.
In this guide, we’re looking at the reasons that it makes sense to brush your teeth twice a day and how you can improve your oral health habits. We’ve also included a poem at the end to help you to remember this simple habit.
Why do we recommend brushing twice a day?
Brushing twice a day helps to remove plaque buildup from the day. It also removes food debris and bacteria that builds up on your teeth and tongue.
Brushing in the morning helps to remove any bacteria and nasties that may have built up over night. If you brush after your breakfast, it will also remove any food debris from your first meal of the day.
Brushing at night helps to remove any food particles leftover from the day. It leaves you with fresh breath and helps to minimise bacteria build up overnight. Brushing your teeth can also be part of your bedtime routine that helps you to wind down for the evening.
Going to bed with fresh breath will also help to remove any bad smells from your food choices throughout the day – which can be essential if you share your bed with another person!
Is brushing more even better?
Brushing twice a day is optimal, and some people may even benefit from brushing three times a day. This is relevant for those who might have specialist dental considerations, such as those with braces or dental implants. You should only brush three times a day if your dentist recommends it, or if you need to brush away bad food smells.
Brushing more than three times a day will not offer any additional protection and could even be bad for your oral health. This is because brushing can become quite abrasive. Brushing your teeth too often or too hard could lead to erosion of your tooth enamel.
If you feel like you need to freshen your breath during the day, try using an alcohol-free mouthwash or chew a piece of sugar-free chewing gum.
Do I also need to floss?
Brushing twice a day is actually only part of the common advice. It’s also recommended that you floss your teeth at least once a day. Flossing helps to access the parts of your teeth that cannot be reached with brushing alone.
Around 40% of the tooth surface is actually between the teeth, and this is where food and bacteria can build up. To prevent this, it’s a good idea to add flossing into your daily routine.
If you aren’t sure how to floss effectively, book an appointment with our dental hygiene team. They can offer advice and support on getting to grips with flossing, so you can feel confident in your oral care routine.
A poem to help you remember to brush your teeth
Brush your teeth, twice a day
Floss them too, if you want them to stay
Mouthwash is a bonus, gargle and spit
Drinking and smoking: please try to quit!
Your mouth is your lifeline, don’t let it down
It’s not cheap for root canals and crowns
You’re never too old for a fitted brace,
There’s no better time to get your teeth straight.
Be proud of your smile and you will shine
They’ll notice your teeth, you’ll be on cloud nine
Dazzle them all, with your pearly whites
Your confidence will take you to all new heights
So brush your teeth, twice a day
And keep at bay… that tooth decay!
